Contemporary Resort Overview

If you find the idea of staying in a resort that is within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom appealing, then Disney's Contemporary Resort is the one to choose.

This massive A-frame tower with two Garden wings was one of the two original Walt Disney World resorts.

As part of the ongoing evolution of the Disney Resorts Collection at Walt Disney World, all nine floors of guest rooms in the A-frame tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort have been completely reimagined. These rooms blend a sleek Monorail motif with some favorite characters from Pixar Animation Studios’ Incredibles films, including Jack-Jack, Frozone, and Edna Mode. New custom artwork in guest rooms and along guest corridors is modern, futuristic and oh so stylish, dahling, complementing the resort’s architecture while putting the Supers’ powers on display. Keep scrolling to see what the rooms look like inside!

In the lobby, guests can now see a collection of modern art pieces as well as historical, behind-the-scenes photographs of Disney’s Contemporary Resort in development and under construction.

The futuristic atmosphere of the Contemporary Resort is obvious when you see the Monorail glide through the main building. In addition to monorail transportation to the Magic Kingdom and from the main monorail hub into Epcot, buses are available to get you to Disney Springs, the Animal Kingdom, and the Disney Water Parks. There's also a water ferry that transports guests to the neighboring Wilderness Lodge.

The 14-story Grand Canyon Concourse is where you will find the monorail station, shops, restaurants and a 90-foot high Mary Blair mural with a Southwestern theme.

The spectacular views are yet another advantage of staying at Disney's Contemporary Resort. Most guest rooms enjoy beautiful views of the Seven Seas Lagoon, Bay Lake, or the Magic Kingdom.

If you want to see Fireworks from your resort, you can schedule dinner at the award winning California Grill and watch the show from the 15th floor observation deck reserved for restaurant patrons or enjoy the show from the 4th floor observation deck that's open to the public. (Better yet, reserve a Magic Kingdom view room in the Contemporary tower.)

The Electrical Water Pageant that glides across Bay Lake nightly can be viewed from the beach area of this resort. In 1991, a meeting and convention center was added to the Contemporary Resort. It features 90,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 42,300 square foot ballroom.

An interesting fact about the Contemporary is that the rooms were prefabricated. They were built off-site and hoisted into place once the hotel was built. Here's another bit of trivia: the original name of the Comtemporary was the Tempo Bay Resort Hotel.

TIP: The South wing rooms are closer to the pool, and convention center. The Tower rooms offer incredible views of Bay Lake, the Seven Seas Lagoon or the Magic Kingdom Park. They are also closer to the monorail station, restaurants and shops. Garden wing rooms can be quite a distance from the monorail. However because of the proximity to the Grand Canyon Concourse, some Tower rooms may be noisy.

Check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m. Guests may check in as early as 7 a.m. and if the room is not ready, store your bags with Bell Services and head for the theme parks.

Contemporary Resort Dining

ARTICLE: The Full Guide to Dining at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

California Grill

One of the best views of the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom Park is from the California Grill on the 15th floor of Disney's Contemporary Resort. If you're lucky enough to dine here during fireworks, the music is piped in, so you can get the full effect of the show.  If you don't get a good enough view from your table, head outside to the terrace area* surrounding the restaurant for the best view on property. The restaurant menu changes according to the season and specializes in Californian-style cuisine. The open kitchen features sushi, pizza baked in wood-burning ovens, grilled meats, poultry, seafood, and vegetarian dishes. Advance Dining Reservations are strongly recommended. The bar inside the restaurant is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and no reservation is required.

*The terrace is only for restaurant guests. However, if you are done with dinner before it's time for fireworks, bring back your receipt and you will be allowed up to the terrace. Same day only.

Steakhouse 71

Steakhouse 71 is located just off the lobby in the Contemporary Resort and has become a highly-recommended hidden gem since it switched over from The Wave. The restaurant’s theme harkens back to the design style of the 1970s, reimagined in a contemporary, comfortable and sleek way. The space gives off a vibe that is similar to the former Steakhouse 55 that used to be located inside the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, CA, and even plays the soundtrack from that location.

Diners can feast on a delicious menu that offers a nod to Walt Disney himself with dishes inspired by some of Walt’s favorites, including The Steakhouse 71 Feast or Walt’s Prime Rib Hash for breakfast and French Onion Soup, Prime Rib, 6-oz Filet Mignon or Dry-aged Bone-In Pork Chop for lunch or dinner. Classic cocktails and a portfolio of Disney family wines are also available.
