Walt Disney World Railroad, Train Station

    • Opened: October 1, 1971
    • Ride length: 20 minutes
    • Lightning Lane: No

    Overview/History:

Take a ride back in time on one of Walt Disney World's Steam Powered Engines.

You can't miss the Main Street Train Station as you enter the Magic Kingdom. This scenic stop is the first spot where you'll hear "all aboard" before the train sets out along the rails.

In addition to Main Street, the trains stop at Frontierland and Fantasyland on their 1.5-mile grand circle tour around the park. If you're looking for a break from the crowds as well as an easy way to get around the park, the trains are the way to go. Strollers are permitted, but they must be folded up. (Strollers rented at the park are not allowed due to size.)

There are four trains that make up the Walt Disney World Railroad, and all were originally built between 1916 and 1928. The locomotives were bought by The Walt Disney Company in 1969 from the Ferrocarriles Unidos de Yucatán, a railroad located in the state of Yucatán in Mexico. After Disney acquired them, each one was restored and named after a different Disney legend.

The four Walt Disney World Railroad trains are:

    1. Walter E. Disney
    2. Lilly Belle (named after Lillian Disney, Walt’s wife)
    3. Roy O. Disney (named after Walt’s brother)
    4. Roger E. Broggie (named after the Imagineer who designed the Disneyland and Walt Disney World railroads)

The Walt Disney World Railroad was an opening day attraction on October 1, 1971, but at that time the only stop the locomotive made was Main Street U.S.A. On May 1, 1972 a second stop was opened in Frontierland. On June 18, 1988 the third station opened in [what was then] Mickey's Birthdayland. (This station is considered the Storybook Circus section of Fantasyland.)

If you really enjoyed your ride on the Walt Disney World Railroad, you may be interested in the tour "Behind the Magic of our Steam Trains." You'll join the opening crew as they prepare the Magic Kingdom's steam trains for their daily operation and visit the backstage roundhouse where these treasured transports are maintained and stored.

Handicapped Accessibility: ECV users will have to transfer to a regular wheelchair for this ride. Handheld captioning devices may be used on this attraction.
