The Disney Dining Plan (DDP) is available for people who either purchase a Disney Resort Hotel Package or book using Disney Vacation Club (DVC) points. With the DDP, you are purchasing meal entitlements ahead of time in essence. For each night of your stay, each guest on the reservation will receive an allotment of Quick Service entitlements (similar to a fast food restaurant), table service (sit-down) meals, and snacks; the number of each is dependent on which of the dining plans you choose to purchase.
Your My Disney Experience account electronically keeps track of your meal entitlements. Your meal receipt will display the number of entitlements that remain for each room reservation (not per guest), allowing you to keep track of your balance as you go. Your dining entitlements can be redeemed in any order during your stay until the balance is at zero or until midnight of the night you check out, whichever comes first. Meaning, if you'd like to use 3 snacks for dinner one day instead of using a Table Service or Quick Service entitlement, you can do that. You can even use 3 quick service entitlements; one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you are so inclined.
The Disney Dining Plan is available in 2 types of packages.

You know your family's eating habits best. Book your room and buy your theme park tickets, you can always choose to add a Disney Dining Plan later. It's important to figure out where you'll be spending your time each day, and then book the Advance Dining Reservations for the meals you want. (That's an important step too! Dining locations can fill up early and fast, and before you plan on dining at a certain restaurant, make sure that you can get a reservation!) Once you've got your reservations booked, take the time, do the math, and see if a dining plan would be a good idea for your family.
If you choose to – and we don't recommend doing this unless you're down to the end of your vacation and still have quite a few entitlements leftover – you may use your Table Service entitlements at Quick Service locations. It does not, however, work the other way around. (i.e. you cannot use Quick Service entitlements at a Table Service location)
